Wayne Rooney dismisses reports he may leave DC United

Wayne Rooney says he is concentrated on playing for DC United following reports that he was looking to leave the Washington-based club in search of a return to playing football in Europe.

The former Manchester United forward moved to the United States on a three-year deal in 2018 after a second spell at Everton - where he began his career. In his debut season with DC United, Rooney scored 23 goals in 40 appearances.

It followed reports that his family were unhappy. "Is that what was in the media? That my wife has got her own way?" questioned the 33-year-old while speaking with AFP. "Those reports are a bit far fetched. I’m concentrating on playing for DC United and trying to get them into the playoffs.

“I haven’t thought about anything beyond that. I am a bit tired as I left on Tuesday morning at 4 am to come to Orlando but I feel in good shape.”

The former England captain spoke last month that he had turned down managerial jobs in England and in the United States. He says that is still the plan in the long term, “coaching is something which I have thought about for a long time.

"I’m in the process now of going through my badges. It would be a shame for me to finish playing and just walk away from the game. I have a desire to go into management and hopefully, the right opportunity will come up.

“I’m enjoying it in MLS though. I'll just how consider how my body feels. If I feel good, I’ll continue to play. What do I want to do after I finish playing? I don’t know. My whole life has been football.”

The 33-year-old had an illustrious playing career in England winning a Champions League, Europa League along with nine domestic titles during his time at Manchester United.
