Watch | Friday Night Racing | Finny Maguire

Finny Maguire was the special guest for this week's Friday Night Racing on Off the Ball.

The decorated amateur joined Ger Gilroy and David Jennings to reflect on his young career thus far and what it's like to follow in his father's legendary steps.

The 20 year old,  who is originally from Cork, is son of Adrian Maguire, who won more than 1,000 winners in Britain and Ireland during his decorated career - which included Cheltenham Gold Cup win in 1992 on Cool Ground.

Finny won his first race on 1st July 2014 when he rode his father's Mm Dazzler to win at Listowel and his biggest success to date came at the Dublin Racing Festival last weekend where he landed the Grade 2 Coolmore NH Sires EBF Mares INH Flat Race on the Dermot McLoughlin-trained Santa Rossa.

Leopardstown has proven to be a happy hunting ground for Maguire with the youngster after he rode three bumper winners at the Christmas Festival at the track last Christmas.

Maguire relocated to Kildare from Cork, telling Ger, "To be a jockey in Cork isn't really reasonable - you're too far south. Kildare is ideal - it's very central to all the racecourses and has motorways every direction coming out of it, so it's great.

"I did Food Science in CIT - three years of that. I could have done a fourth year but didn't want to - I wanted to get out and start giving the horses 100%."

Talking about his decision to remain amateur for the time being, Maguire said: "While I was in college, it made a lot of sense to be amateur - you couldn't be professional and go to college but just the way things are going...if I was to turn professional, I'd have to be really strict with my diet which would be doable but things are going ok at the moment," he added.
