N'Golo Kante is like Paul McGrath - you can't get past him - Pat Nevin

Pat Nevin has praised the contribution of midfielder N'Golo Kante in France's journey to the World Cup final.

Les Bleus have over come Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium on their way to pinnacle of the competition and despite having brilliantly creative players such as Griezmann, Pogba and Mbappé - Nevin was quick to highlight the diminutive midfielder's efforts in Russia.

"That ability to see where the danger is going to come from and then get there at a speed - that's very strange and hard to understand and find yourself outnumbered 2:1 and still come away with the ball - I really don't think I've ever seen anyone do it," he told Nathan.

"I mean, people talk about Makelele, I was fortunate enough to play against Brian Robson and he was fantastic but I mean, over in Ireland, you'll remember what it was like with Paul McGrath, as a classic example of this.

"You put McGrath anywhere and no one could get by him. I can remember the times in my career when I got by Paul McGrath because it was that rare - you don't think about that with other people. Kante is like that - you just don't get by him - nobody does.

"And those guys, you talk about them within the game - they are so few and far between. I know Paul and N'Golo are in different positions a lot of the time but of that ilk - they are just unusual and strange and weird human beings that could do things that mere mortals couldn't," he added.
