'Mourinho has lost something material - he is the equivalent of Lukaku in managerial terms'

Graham Hunter says Jose Mourinho has "lost something material" since leaving Manchester United but says he can still be a force to be reckoned with in world football.

An unceremonious departure from Manchester United in December brought to an end a difficult start to his third season with the club. Speaking on Tuesday's OTB AM, Graham Hunter explained how Mourinho is currently viewed and whether the links to Real Madrid are substantial.

"If you want my honest opinion, having watched him and spoken to people who have worked for him in each of his last four clubs - my opinion is that he has lost something material," he said.

"He is the equivalent of Lukaku in managerial terms. I think Jose Mourinho needs a professor. Somebody who is beyond the influence Jorge Mendes has on him in terms of here's your next financial move, here's the way you can play this politically.

"People use the phrase 'out of date', that everyone else has moved on without him. I think that's a really poor way of describing what's gone on.

"I think he's lost his way individually. I think his coaching ideas are probably as relevant and if well applied - with a squad fully behind him - I think he's as damaging to other teams as he once was."

jose mourinho Jose Mourinho struggled to inspire his players during a rocky third season in charge of Manchester United.

He continued: "It's him who has changed and him who has lost his way - the one long sulk as you call it is a good assessment of what's gone on over the last few months.

"But, in my opinion, the traces of what we saw at Manchester United were fully available during his last year at Real Madrid. They were full available for parts of their tenure at Chelsea.

"Therefore I think there's more wrong than his petulance that he wasn't allowed get the specific players he asked for which I think is legitimate.

"Ed Woodward is no technical director or a director of football and needs to be moved aside. I think we can say he did back Mourinho financially, but that it was a fall-out over specifics.

"I think it's Mourinho who has the specific problem and I think it's Mourinho who needs to change - not his club situation but his relationship with a director of football."
