Jim Gavin: Dublin's "door is always open" for Diarmuid Connolly

Dublin manager Jim Gavin says the "door is always open" for Diarmuid Connolly.

The multiple All Ireland winning boss was speaking to Off The Ball's John Duggan at the 2018 Leinster GAA launch and touched on the future of one of his key men in recent years who has been absent for much of this year as the Championship looms.

He played just once for Dublin in the National League during the Spring.

"Over recent weeks Diarmuid hasn't been available for club activity in the championship, both hurling and football, and for county football so that's a decision we respect and I hope everybody else does as well. It is an amateur sport but the door is always open for Diarmuid in the Dublin senior football team," said Gavin, adding, "hopefully we'll see him back playing Gaelic games soon".

Bernard Brogan, who is recovering from a serious knee injury, is recuperating well according to Gavin, although there is no definitive timescale when it comes to his Dublin return.

"He's on track - probably a little bit ahead of it. The medical team and Bernard are working really hard as a team. Things are going well for Bernard. Business is going well and family life is going well and that's great to see," he said.

Gavin has also been impressed by Michael Darragh Macauley's form, having not received much game-time in 2017.

"In fairness to him, he kept at it, he never gave up, kept trying, kept preparing, had a really good strong pre-season and the fruits of that in the National League camaign," he said.
