"Inspirational" - Seamus Coleman's Walters tribute

Seamus Coleman and Mick McCarthy have paid warm tributes to Jon Walters.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement from club and international football due to a long-standing injury.

Coleman played alongside Walters for Ireland from 2011 and was glowing in his praise.

Real Example

"As long as he's been in the squad, he's been nothing short of an example to all of us," said the Ireland captain.

"The drive every time he's played for his country has been inspirational. And these new lads coming into the squad in the next few years, he's a real example and people like him will be massively missed."

Coleman also revealed how Walters broke the news to his former team-mates.

"He just came in yesterday and let a few of us know," he said.

McCarthy also spoke warmly about a player he was ultimately unable to work with in his second spell as Ireland manager.

"It is sad to see him go. It happens to all of us," said McCarthy at the press conference ahead of the Gibraltar game.

"I just reiterate what Seamus said that he was an inspirational player for Ireland. It's sad when you lose those kind of players and sadder still when it's because of injury."
