"It's why I won't be an inter-county manager" - Dublin's Michael Darragh Macauley

Michael Darragh Macauley and Paddy Andrews have plenty to occupy themselves with at the moment.

The Dublin duo are aiming to complete the fabled 'Drive For Five' this Sunday when they face Kerry in the All-Ireland football final.

Ahead of that, the two 30-somethings spoke to our own Maire Treasa Ni Cheallaigh.

As he discussed manager Jim Gavin's unenviable task of settling on a starting XV, Michael Darragh Macauley was quite revelatory on his own unwillingness around going into management.

"He's not going to write us all a personal sonnet and sing it to us with a guitar," Macauley said jokingly.

"He's the boss"

"It's a tough gig and it's why I won't be an inter-county manager. Or part of the reason why I won't be an inter-county manager. It's not easy but he's the boss and that's what you have to do."

Macauley expanded on that assertion and what's at the root of it.

"I probably do like to be liked. So maybe that's part of it," he offered.

"Even as a teacher, I'm way too nice basically. I probably don't do the 'angry' thing very well."

Maire Treasa also spoke to Andrews, who detailed the broken jaw he suffered in March.

"It was a sore one and fortunately I hadn't had an injury like that before," he said.

"But a very painful one and I had a fair idea the second it happened. Before I even hit the ground, I knew something was up. It was a sore collision and I was in the Mater Hospital, jeez, within 20 minutes.

"I think the game was still on and I got a scan. At that time, you've probably a lot of irrational thinking going on. 'Am I going to play again?' Or 'how mad is this going to be?'

"But the medical team and the surgeons... ultimately I got operated on in St James Hospital the following day - St Patrick's Day.

"And a couple of metal plates in and they said, 'Look, it's a common enough injury, it's very sore and an awkward one as well'.

"But they said, 'In 6-8 weeks, you're going to be back.' So that certainly relaxes you."
