DJ Carey lauds Jim Gavin for Kilkenny Minor footballers coaching sessions

It's been three years but Kilkenny are back in the Leinster Minor Football Championship and it's under the guidance of DJ Carey.

The Kilkenny hurling legend has the challenge of trying to resurrect Gaelic Football in an uncompromisingly sliothar stronghold.

They lost their Championship opener 3-16 to 3-8 but earned praise for their performance.

Carey is relishing the challenge and the Cats have also had some help from a well-known source.

Carey joined Off The Ball to chat about this new football adventure.

"We're a long way behind Louth and we're a long way behind Wicklow and Kildare, who we still have to play," he said.

"We're hurling people trying to look after football"

"And we're even further behind Dublin and Kerry. But I would say, if you were interviewing the Louth manager this evening, he would say they would've been reasonably impressed .

"We held onto the ball. Of old, Kilkenny might have got the ball and played it like hurling - kicked it as far as we could. But we tried to work it out and work it out on the field.

"We tried to play like football and as I said to one or two others, we're hurling people trying to look after football. So I've never been to a football training session in another county. I'd never seen football being coached.

"So we were trying to coach it off the television or off of being at matches that we've seen ourselves, rather than having everything perfect."

Carey also revealed that Dublin's multiple All-Ireland winning manager has been very helpful.

"Jim Gavin came down and gave us a great coaching session last year," he said.

"And he was delighted to come down and whatever we picked up from there. But Mickey Harte is a hero of mine and Eamonn Fitzmaurice. You like to see the attitude and then try and impart it onto the field."
