UFC confirm the postponement of Dublin 'Fight Night'

The UFC has confirmed the postponement of its first event to be held in Ireland since 2015, as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions.

The 'Fight Night' event was due to take place at the 3Arena in Dublin on Saturday August 15.

A short statement was issued by the UFC on Wednesday announcing the postponement.

"Due to current government restrictions on public gatherings in the Republic of Ireland, UFC Fight Night originally scheduled for August 15th will not take place as planned at the 3Arena in Dublin," the statement reads.

"UFC looks forward to returning with an event in the near future."

There have been three UFC events held at the same venue in Dublin previously; UFC 93 in 2009, UFC Fight Night: McGregor v Brandao and UFC Fight Night 76: Holohan vs. Smolka.

No competitors had been announced for this summer's event but the Fight Nights are the second-tier events of the world's leading promoter in mixed martial arts.

The pandemic has not stopped the UFC putting athletes in the octagon elsewhere with controversial events going ahead in Jacksonville and Las Vegas in recent weeks.

UFC 249 took place in Jacksonville behind closed doors, despite one of its fighters being found positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the event.

Middleweight Jacare Souza withdrew from his bout with Uriah Hall, as he and two of his cornermen tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Souza has since made a full recovery and is back in training.

Yas Island, Abu Dhabi has been revealed as the location of UFC's 'Fight Island' where there will be four cards - on July 11, 15, 18 and 25.

The first of those cards will be a pay-per-view, UFC 251, with the other three classified as Fight Nights.

It has been reported in the US that the UFC will test fighters, coaches and cornermen before leaving for United Arab Emirates.
