Tommy Walsh: Outstanding Galway shine in 'game of the summer'

Tommy Walsh has hailed an 'outstanding' Galway side after their one-point victory over Kilkenny, in a match that he called "the game of the summer."

Tommy was in attendance at Nowlan Park, as Galway overturned the Cats in an enthralling match - the final result being 3-20 to 2-22 in the Tribesmen's favour. Tommy believes that this should give a big boost to Galwegians wherever they may be.

"For Galway, we have been waiting for Galway to spark into life all summer - now look at that!

"The talking points, podcasts and local radio stations will be taking on a whole new life this week, because they were outstanding today.

"There were so many great performers - Conor Whelan was sharp all day, Jason Flynn's assists and goals, and Brian Concannon got a brilliant goal in the second half.

"That [goal] came from Flynn. He had a chance to tap the ball over the bar, but he saw Concannon out of the corner of his eye, who buried it with the stick. A beautiful pass from Flynn. Concannon knew exactly what he had to do. It was brilliant from that point of view."

The performers for Galway did not end there.

"I have to give a special mention to Daithi Burke - it was his second game back in after a lay-off through injury. He was immense in that second half. Joseph Cooney, just back from Australia - in the second half he was catching balls."

But it was particular praise that went to a Kilkenny player, one who Tommy holds in great esteem.

"On the opposite end, I have seen TJ Reid put in some performances, but that is the greatest performance that I've seen him giving."

"The scores - last year, Kilkenny scored 2-11 or something like that. Today, they went out and scored 2-22 - so huge positives coming out of this game for Kilkenny."

In a game with three sendings off, Tommy reiterated his desire for red cards to be reserved solely for deliberate fouls, as opposed to accidental misdemeanours that happen in the course of a match.

"We were talking to a lot of the players that were out there today - there was no dirt in that game, it was a brilliant, brilliant game."
