UEFA postpones three major European finals over COVID-19 outbreak

UEFA has taken the decision to postpone three major European finals but will wait before deciding when to reschedule the games.

European football's governing body has decided to call off the men's and women's Champions League finals and the Europa League final.

UEFA confirmed the postponement of the three deciders, which were originally fixed for May, in a short statement released on Monday evening.

"As a result of the COVID-19 crisis in Europe UEFA has today formally taken the decision to postpone the following matches, originally scheduled for May 2020: UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, UEFA Europa League Final and UEFA Champions League Final.

"No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates.

"The working group, established last week as a result of the conference call among the stakeholders of European football, which was chaired by UEFA President, Aleksander Čeferin, will analyse the options available.

"The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course."

The men's Champions League final was due to take place on May 30, at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

There are still four last-16 ties to be completed with Manchester City v Real Madrid, Juventus v Lyon, Barcelona v Napoli and Bayern Munich v Chelsea all having played just one leg.

RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Paris Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid have all qualified for the quarter-finals.

All eight Europa League last-16 ties are also at the halfway mark with Manchester United, Wolves and Rangers among those still in the mix for the quarter-finals.

The decider was due to be played in Gdansk on May 27.

There are four quarter-finals to play in the women's Champions League; Lyon v Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid v Barcelona, Arsenal v Paris Saint Germain and Glasgow City v Wolfsburg, waiting to be played.

That final was fixed for May 24 and will be staged at Viola Park in Vienna.

The news comes almost a week after it was announced that Euro 2020 is postponed until next year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
