La Liga given the go ahead to resume next month

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has given the official green light for La Liga to get back underway on the 8th of June.

The top two flights in Spain have been suspended since March the 11th following the coronavirus pandemic but teams recently returned to training.

"Spain has done what it should and now new horizons are opening for everyone," Sanchez announced in an address to his nation this afternoon. "The time has come to resume many daily activities. From June 8, La Liga will return."

The league's organisers had been targeting June the 12th as a date for the resumption of fixtures and La Liga president Javier Tebas says games are likely to be played in quick succession.

"That's what I hope," Tebas said. "We shouldn't have any problems playing on Mondays across the eleven rounds of matches we have left to play.

"I hope for some sense from the Spanish Football Federation on this, because it's very important for us to be able to give both our national and international broadcasters, and fans across the world, football on as many days as possible to ensure as little disruption as possible."

Barcelona are two points clear of Real Madrid at the top of table with 11 matches still to play.
