Jason McAteer talks 'tragedy' of Sean Cox and LFC-Ireland charity match

Jason McAteer joined the Football Show to talk about how former sportspeople and fans are rallying together to support Sean Cox and his family, following the attack that left him severely brain damaged outside of Anfield.

Fans can support the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust at the Aviva Stadium on 12th April, where an Ireland XI will take on a Liverpool XI to raise funds for Sean's care.

"It's a tragedy. An absolute tragedy," McAteer said of the attack before the Roma-Liverpool Champions League match in April 2018.

"We talk about going to football matches, and things like this should never happen. It was an absolute tragedy, but with the Irish and Liverpool connection, it has been something that I have been following closely since it happened.

"I met the family Martina [Sean's wife] and Jack [Sean's son] - I was up with them in Dunboyne yesterday doing some stuff to promote the game. We went to his local GAA club, with which he was very influential in setting up. It is a great setup with the club, facilities and what they do for the kids."

Jason has been incredibly impressed by the work that Dunboyne GAA have done in the community, and Sean Cox in particular.

"He was very influential in bringing the men's and women's side of the community together to amalgamate it and make it what it is now.

"It has been very interesting learning about his life and how influential in the community he was. The sad side of things is dealing with the aftermath of what happened.

"I met [the family] when we were over for Napoli in the summer. The club have taken it on to help as much as they can, which is fantastic and now we are in a position to do the Legends game on the 12th April."

If you are in a position to help the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust, either by attending the game yourself or by buying a ticket to donate, you can do so here.
