The GAA has confirmed that the opening round Connacht Senior Football Championship clash between London and Roscommon has now been cancelled.
It had been due to take place at Ruislip on May the 3rd but has joined the meeting of New York and Galway in being lost due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Head of Games Administration with the GAA, Fergal McGill, says they're targeting June 15th as a date for the resumption of games - with a two week lead in time for players to prepare for games.
“The current situation is that there’s no changes to any of our championship structures to date," he told RTE's Morning Ireland. "We’re due to start on May 10th, which is well outside the April 19th flag that the Government have planted if you like so that’s still a possibility as a start date and when that’s a possibility we can’t really look at changing championship structures but I do have to concede it seems unlikely we’ll be back playing by then.
“The London and Roscommon game was scheduled for May 3rd, we have taken the decision now to cancel that game. That has to do with the number of Roscommon people who had planned to travel to the game and who had flight and accommodation arrangements made.
“We’d like to give teams a fortnight breathing space it at all possible before asking them to come back into competitive action. If we can get up and running by the middle of June, then I think we’ll be able to hold onto our All-Ireland final dates. We’d probably have to look at straight knockout provincial championships in football and hurling but potentially with a backdoor as well.
He admits the provincial hurling championships are now likely to be played on a knock-out rather than round-robin basis and is hopeful the All-Ireland finals won't have to be moved if the Championships commence in June.
