Southampton complete €18m signing of Blackburn striker Armstrong

Southampton have signed Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers, in a deal worth a potential £15million (€18m).

The signing sets the table for Republic of Ireland striker Michael Obafemi to move in the opposite direction.

Armstrong scored 28 goals in the Championship last season for Blackburn, and is a direct replacement for Danny Ings.

The 24-year old believes Southampton's high-pressing style of play will suit him to a tee.

"I think that’s what attracted me towards Southampton – the way they play, they’re on the front foot, the pressing, counter-attacking,” he said.

“That’s something that’s my kind of game as well – I’ve scored most of my goals on the counter-attack or from chances being created high up the pitch where I’m taking balls off defenders.

“I spoke to the gaffer and it just seemed perfect, and I’ve touched on it before – I’m over the moon that I’m here and hopefully I can kick-start my career.

“I had a chat with him and he just explained how he wants me to play, how his team play, and that was a major key of coming here.”

Armstrong was the second striker signed by Ralph Hasenhuttl on Tuesday.

Highly-rated Chelsea attacker Alejandro Broja has joined on loan for the season.

The 19-year old has already won six senior caps for Albania, and scored 11 goals in 34 appearances for Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie last term.

“Armando is a very talented player who we were impressed by last season," Hasenhuttl said.

“He is young, but he comes now with a full season of experience in senior football with a good team, and he brings a lot of qualities that can help us.

“He is a strong, quick player with a good instinct and this makes him a good fit for the way we like to play.

“I know how highly regarded he is by Chelsea, and I think this will be a good place for him to continue his own development as well.”
