Sonny Bill Williams offers to take pay cut to help Toronto's Super League side

Rugby league star Sonny Bill Williams says he'd be happy to take a pay cut during the sport's shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There's concern some Super League clubs could face financial problems due to the stoppage and Williams - who's currently playing for Toronto - says he's willing to take a cut to his wages if needed.

"A hundred per cent, I would be that way inclined," the two-time Rugby World Cup winner told Sky Sports.

"When it comes to taking pay cuts, to keep the game afloat, it would be crazy not to think that's going to occur, especially with the way things are happening in the sporting world.

"I consider myself in a privileged position and taking a step back and understanding that sport is just a game and there are things in life that are more important.

"But in terms of sport, it is crazy to think some organisations might not make it through."

Toronto have lost six of their matches so far in their debut Super League campaign and Williams has taken the break as a chance to have elective surgery.

"The injury came at a pretty good time - we have probably got a couple of months off at least.

"They found a bit of scar tissue and cleaned it up. It has been a difficult start but I love it. This is the game I grew up playing."
