'Sometimes they try to referee the game' | Seamus Coleman on Switzerland's ref tactics

It was a tense affair between Ireland and Switzerland on Thursday night. As we saw near the end of the game, tensions flared when Seamus Coleman got into a heated exchange with a number of Swiss players.

The game would end up finishing 1-1 at the Aviva after David McGoldrick scored a late equaliser with five minutes to go.

Speaking to Off The Ball after the game, Ireland captain Seamus Coleman said he felt the Swiss players were trying to influence the referee's decisions.

"Ah yeah look, sometimes they get in around the referee and try to referee the games at times.

"You know it's important to have a player in there to make sure we're not just going to let them dictate how the ref manages the game.

"It's all tactics and it's all part of the game really," Coleman said.

He also spoke about his partnership with Callum Robinson on the right-hand side last night.

Ticking over

"Yeah look, I played with him the last time we were in as well and obviously he's doing great at the minute at club level.

"You know I just keep ticking over and keep trying to do what I'm doing and do what I can.

"It could have been better at times tonight, but overall I felt ok and a point is a good result," the Everton full-back said.

It was a big night as well for Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick having scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland.

Coleman said he was pleased to see him get off the mark for his country.

"Yeah I am delighted for him, absolutely delighted for him, he works so hard for the team as you can see tonight.

"We know he has got that quality and that goal will do him the world of good," Coleman stated.
