Solskjaer should get United job regardless of PSG tie - John O'Shea

John O'Shea has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get the permanent Manchester United manager job, for off-the-pitch changes as well as results.

O'Shea spent five years in the United senior squad with Solskjaer, in one of the most successful spells in the club's storied history.

Speaking to Off The Ball, and with a nod to the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson, O'Shea believes that it is as much the little touches to the behind-the-scenes that will secure him the job.

"Yeah, I think so,"said O'Shea, when asked whether he would back Solskjaer.

"I'd be amazed if he doesn't. Just the fact of how he has turned the club around so quickly, and it's not just the results on the pitch. It is important what he has done on the pitch. But it is more off the pitch, the impact that he has had on the team around the training ground and the whole place at Old Trafford - the whole place is buzzing again.

"Results have dictated that too. He has been - alongside Mick Phelan - a crucial part of that. Obviously, Michael Carrick and the rest of the coaching staff have been crucial, too.

"He's just brought a freshness and he's shown his qualities. He's not just a nice fella, but he has shown his qualities as a coach and as a manager."

It is in part changing the 'good' players within the United squad into 'great' ones that has so impressed Waterford's O'Shea.

"He has made them perform. They have consistently shown it in the last few weeks.

"PSG was a bit of a blip, but you have to remember that PSG have been at the forefront of the European game, and they have had a right go to get success in the Champions League, financially, as well.

"People were making out like it would be quite comfortable for United but PSG have a fantastic squad and they were able to cope with it. Ole has a big task on his hands to turn that one around in Paris.

"But even if he doesn't turn it around, the job has to be his going forward."
