What has happened to Sligo Rovers?

Listen to the full chat above via the podcast

A rarity as a full-time setup within the League of Ireland and title winners as recently as 2012, Sligo Rovers have had a very poor season thus far.

Out of the FAI Cup, having dominated the competition in recent years, and well off the pace in the league, something is amiss in the North West.

Roddy Collins and Stuey Byrne joined us in studio today to chat about Sligo's problems.

"Sligo are full time. They are effectively the only legitimate full-time team in the league. Looking at the moment, mentally and fitness wise, they just look off the pace. They don't look right at all," said Stuey.

Stuey pointed out one-year contracts as a problem for all the clubs in the country, affecting players mindsets and also feels that the league needs clubs like Sligo Rovers to succeed.

Roddy also feels motivation levels are more of an issue when teams begin to crumble in the league, rather than fitness.

He also feels the injury to defender Gavin Peers and the departure of a few key players has left Sligo short of their previous levels this season.

"Just looking at the overall picture and when you have a weak squad - competition creates motivation - and people don't feel there is something behind them pushing them, it can lead to all this," said Roddy.
