Wayne Rooney to remain as Manchester United's captain under new regime

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will continue as Manchester United's captain under the new manager's reign.

Rooney has struggled in recent years at Manchester United, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford stealing the limelight from the England captain last year.

The former Everton youngster was used as a midfielder in England's Euro 2016 campaign as his days a a front-line striker seem to be coming to a close.

"I am quite surprised with so many question marks around this guy," Mourinho told The Telegraph ahead of Manchester United's friendly with Borussia Dortmund. "He is the club captain, he is the manager’s captain, he is the players’ captain"

"I trust him a lot. I think he’s going to be a very important player for me and no problem for him."

The 30-year-old should become Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer in the coming months. He is currently on 245 goals for the club, and needs only five more to overtake Bobby Charlton.

Ronney returned to the squad ahead of the tour of China, but was not part of the matchday squad that played against Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai. He will be expected to feature in the team's second game of the tour, against rivals Manchester City in Beijing.
