Goalkeepers can lead a lonely existence and as the last line of defence, they can often find themselves stranded as they pay for the mistakes of the defenders in front of them.
If they are the one who make a mistake, they're pilloried and taunted, labeled as rubbish. However, UEFA's save of the season award recognises those oft-forgotten moments where the goalkeeper gets it right and produces a moment of magic that saves his team, and they opened the voting up to the internet earlier this summer.
With 28% of the vote, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's fantastic double save against Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich in the Champions League came out on top, and it truly is a brilliant piece of goalkeeping.
Ter Stegen beat out competition from fellow German Manuel Neuer in second place (20% of the online vote) and Gianluigi Buffon's save that stopped what looked to be a certain Dani Alves goal (20%).
