Jack Warner, a former FIFA vice president arrested last week in connection with the ongoing corruption investigation, has released a video defending himself.
In the video, in which 72-year-old Jack Warner thanks those who have supported him, he argues that "this has stemmed from the failed US bid to host the World Cup". To back up his point, he holds up a printed article from the The Onion, seemingly unaware it is satire.
The spoof article states, "after the Justice Department indicted numerous executives from world soccer’s governing body on charges of corruption and bribery, frantic and visibly nervous officials from FIFA held an impromptu press conference Wednesday to announce that the United States has been selected to host this summer’s 2015 World Cup."
An edited version of the original video has since been uploaded, with The Onion references removed. However, the original has been widely shared on YouTube and other social media. You can watch it below, with The Onion references beginning at the five-minute mark:
