Wales' Neil Taylor faces longer ban as FIFA open proceedings

Wales defender Neil Taylor is facing a longer ban over the tackle that left Ireland captain Seamus Coleman with a broken leg.

Football's world governing body FIFA has opened proceedings against the Aston Villa left back.

He was red carded for the challenge in the goalless World Cup qualifier in Dublin last Friday night.

Everton right back Coleman was given gas as he left the field and the incident was too graphic for TV replays.

The Co Donegal native is facing up to a year out injured, having undergone surgery on a broken fibula and tibula.

Taylor will already serve an automatic one match ban for the red card but that could be increased to three fixtures in the World Cup qualifying campaign depending on the outcome of FIFA's examination of the incident.

Speaking immediately after the 0-0 draw last Friday night, Wales manager Chris Coleman had said that Taylor was "not that type of player" in relation to the tackle.

Coleman said at the time: "Sadly for Seamus, it looks like it's a bad one. Neil Taylor is not that type of player. He's had a serious injury himself. He's a great boy, he's a cracking lad. I've not seen the challenge but I've seen the outcome and it's a bad one for Seamus and that's a shame because that's someone I respect. He's one of the best full backs in the Premier League."

Meanwhile Ireland manager Martin O'Neill felt the injury to Seamus Coleman put things in perspective: "It's a big, big loss. A big loss to Everton. A big loss to us. He'll fight back I hope, but it puts things in perspective."
