Victor Valdes' slide into obscurity continues

Six time La Liga and three time Champions League winner Victor Valdes' gradual slide into obscurity continued today, as he was released from his contract with Standard Liege in Belgium.

On loan from Manchester United, the stopper made eight appearances for the club since joining in January after a fall out with Louis Van Gaal.

However, despite winning the Belgian Cup, the club have decided to cut the Spanish internationals time at the club short, citing medical issues and wanting to give youth a chance as the reason for letting him go.

“As we decided to give more playing time to the youth players at the end of the season and because they couldn’t be selected for medical reasons, the Spanish goalkeeper and the Greek midfielder have decided in agreement with the club to finish the loan at the end of this week,” Liege said in a statement.

“Standard de Liege wants to thank Ioannis and Victor for everything they did for our club, especially during the successful campaign on the way to the Belgian Cup. We also wish them the best in the rest of their professional career.”

It continues a remarkable fall from grace for Valdes, as he struggles for playing time following his decision to leave Barcelona two years ago.

Since then, he has only made two appearances for United after joining on a free before being shipped out on loan, while his contract at the club expires this summer.

Valdes played 387 times for the Catalonian giants during a 12 year spell, and he earned 20 international caps with an all conquering Spanish team, winning the World Cup in 2010 and a European Championship in 2012.
