Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes that Donny van de Beek made a mistake in joining the club.
Van Gaal made his comments following United's 0-0 draw with Manchester City, a game in which the midfielder did not feature.
van de Beek
Van Gaal believes that the Dutchman will struggle to settle in at Old Trafford while Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are in situ.
"I hope his time will come, but I don't think he made a good choice," van Gaal told Dutch football channel Ziggo.
'I said that right away. If you have Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, what position should van de Beek be in?
"He doesn't have the qualities of Pogba and Fernandes. And now you see that Pogba often doesn't start. Where should van de Beek play then?
"I think you could have seen that beforehand. There are so many teams, which could have done better justice to him, also in the top. He is a boy with many qualities."
Manchester United's midfield
Journalist Daniel Harris joined OTB AM to discuss the different aspects that the two midfielders can bring to United.
There are subtle differences between van de Beek and Fernandes that offer United different dimensions, according to Harris.
"When he plays with Fernandes, I think United like a much more dangerous and better team.
"Fernandes isn't a player that helps you control a game that much, he is someone who helps you win a game; he provides decisive moments with passes and goals.
"Donny gives you that, but he also participates in the game more. He is also taking the ball and knocking it off, keeping the game moving.
"The combination of those two players is great - the question is how and when Ole will look to play them together - [the PSG game] is a good example of whether he will or whether he won't.
"My guess is that Ole would prefer to play three at the back."
