'Zinedine Zidane is really good tactically and the standout Manchester United candidate' | Vinny Perth

Manchester United should hire Zinedine Zidane to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to Dundalk boss Vinny Perth. Zidane has proven his tactical nous to Perth during games against Liverpool.

Dundalk manager Vinny Perth joined Nathan Murphy on Off The Ball to discuss Manchester United.

Manchester United finally pulled the plug on the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era.

It was a 4-1 defeat away to Watford that pushed the board past the brink. Yet, despite this move coming for a very long time, it appears that they do not have a plan in place. Michael Carrick is taking over as an interim manager. But he is an interim manager until they can find another interim manager apparently.

The only thing less organized or prepared than Solskjaer's teams on the field was the Manchester United board apparently.

Vinny Perth broke down Manchester United's failings on Sunday.

"We will never know the inner workings of it," Perth said.

"But Manchester United the recruitment and the management of the club over the last two or three years has been shocking. Ultimately, he's the one that has to carry the can for that. He has to pay the price for it. You go back to the seasons they finished third and second, you look at someone like Martial or Rashford or Greenwood, they had a season where they scored more than 60 goals between them.

"And United had big problems further back the pitch yet all they've really done is brought in Sanchez, Cavani and Ronaldo. They haven't fixed the problems further back with recruitment."

Thomas Tuchel took over for Frank Lampard last season. Tuchel turned the Chelsea squad around immediately despite them lacking a quality striker. Tuchel's tactical nous is far superior to that of Frank Lampard. Manchester United fans are hoping they can bring in a manager to have a similar impact.

Can they?

"No, I don't think so. I think they can fix it short-term and they can definitely get a boost. But ultimately United have had problems in and around the back four and the defensive midfield position. It's going to cost a lot of money to fix that over time. I've watched Ronaldo live against Ireland for Portugal, there's no doubt he's a special player, but he's left them in no man's land in terms of what they are.

"They're not a counter-attacking team and they're not a high-pressing team so they're in no man's land.

"They need a strong manager to come in there and galvanize them.

"They need another manager to reinvent them."

And while the general consensus is that there isn't a standout candidate. Perth sees Zinedine Zidane as a perfect fit.

"I see Zidane as a huge possibility. I know there's a language barrier there, but he's someone who has done it at the highest level. He's somebody who would get the respect off the players as soon as he walks into the dressing room...He's really good tactically, people question his tactics.

"Zidane is the standout candidate for United."
