UEFA waiting on report about Manchester United abusive chants

Following the abusive chants about the Hillsborough tragedy which could be heard during Liverpool's home encounter against Manchester United, a report is being assembled for UEFA.

Chants about the tragic events which took place in 1989, could be heard from the Anfield Road, where some Manchester fans were situated.

The Manchester club released a statement condemning the actions of those who allegedly sang abusive chants about the tragic events, which read:

''It has always been the position of Manchester United that chants of this nature, which refer to historical tragedies, have no place in the game and do not refelct the club’s values. We are discussing with fans to seek support in preventing this behaviour in the future.''

The latest reports now indicate that UEFA is waiting on a report from the Europa League match which they will use to decide whether or not to take any disciplinary action.

96 people lost their lives due to overcrowding in the Leppings Lane end of Hillsbourough during an FA Cup semi-final in 1989. Chants about this tragic event, as well as chants about the 1958 Munich air crash, have marred meetings between Liverpool and Manchester United down through the years.
