Transfer Roundup: City miss out on Godin, De Gea being pushed out and Shaqiri to Everton?

Manchester City had two big signings on their radar earlier this week, and it looks as though at least one of them won't be happening, after Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin signed a new and improved deal at the club, turning down a move to the Premier League in the process. Godin is staying with Diego Simeone and Atletico, who have seemingly made a point of keeping their big players this summer (except for Arda Turan), turning down over €200 million worth of offers for Koke, Antine Griezmann and 'keeper Jan Oblak according to Marca.

The other big name on their list was Kevin De Bruyne, but Wolfsburg have been pretty clear that they expect to get something in the region of £45 million for their man. The Bundesliga side claim that they have had no offers for their star player, with the Managing Director Klaus Allofs saying that he's 99.9% sure he will stay.

David De Gea seems to be stuck in a bit of limbo at the moment, as Louis Van Gaal has accused Manchester United of trying to get their man on the cheap (The Guardian). According to The Daily Star, even if he does stay, the Spaniard won't be back in the team until at least mid-September, or until United get a "realistic" offer for him.

On the other hand, they have been given a small bit of hope in their pursuit of Sergio Ramos, as the defender has yet to sign a new contract at Real Madrid. However, the player and his agent have been told definitively by the president that Ramos will be going nowhere this summer, so that one is still up in the air.

Xherdan Shaqiri's move to Stoke was agreed earlier this summer, but it seems that the player dug his heels in and refused to join Mark Hughes' revolution at the club. However, there still looks to be a possibility of him joining a side in England after Everton were linked with a loan move for the Inter Milan man. They're also hoping to sign Ramiro Funes Mori from River Plate, who are fresh off the back of a Copa Libertadores win.

In other news, Arsene Wenger has once again denied that he will be making a move to buy Karim Benzema, but according to The Daily Express he has refused to rule out an "exceptional" signing before the window closes. Jose Mourinho has similarly highlighted that his club need a new left-back before the end of transfer season. West Brom are ready to break their club transfer record to sign Venezuela's Solomon Rondon for £15 million from Zenit St. Petersburg. West Ham are in the running to sign Javier Hernandez, who refused a move to Los Angeles Galaxy already this summer, but could miss out on Alan Halilovic as Barcelona want to use him as a makeweight in a move to replace Pedro. Aaron Lennon could be on the way to Stoke, after he wasn't given a squad number at Tottenham and appears to have no future there. Mauricio Pochettino has played down his club's lack of activity in the transfer market, but they are apparently closing in on the signing of Lyon's Clinton N’Jie for £14.5 million. Alan Pardew has said that there have been no offers for Yannick Bolasie, who they've said will cost any potential bidders £25 million. Tim Sherwood has been dealt a blow in his attempts to bring in Joleon Lescott and Emmanuel Adebyaor, but refuses to say that the deals are not going to still go through. Finally, Esteban Cambiasso has signed with Olympiakos after refusing a new contract at Leicester.
