As Group G stands Germany and USA will both definitely reach the World Cup last-16 with a draw tomorrow night.
And it would be a convenient result for both sides that are managed by fellow Germans and former colleagues.
German football writer Uli Hesse joined us tonight to preview the match says "everyone is confident of going through".
But the convenience of a draw has evoked memories of the Shame of Gijon between West Germany and Austria.
In the 1982 World Cup, both sides knew a 1 - 0 win for the Germans would put sides through and eliminate group rivals Algeria in one fell swoop.
That result came to pass and the match has lived on in infamy, with the rules changed to prevent such an event from reoccurring as FIFA made sure that all final group stage matches kicked off at the same time.
Uli does not belief that match has any connection with what may transpire tomorrow.
"It was a special situation back then. You can't quite compare it to today because there is one result. But back then, it was about the actual scoreline. A 1 - 0 defeat was enough for Austria to go through. A 2 - 0 defeat would have been okay for them too, so all they had to do was to avoid losing by three goals, whereas Germany had to win," said Uli, who felt the 1982 World Cup was a "disgraceful" tournament overall which negatively marked German fans of that generation.
But he feels that myths now surround that match in Gijon, suggesting that the game was not as immediately pedestrian as people remember once Germany took the lead. But he saw the second half as "disgraceful" and Uli has heard "conflicting things" about the possibility of a pact between both teams at half-time.
But Uli believes that Klinsmann would like to beat Germany because he has been "written out of history" since he was replaced by his former assistant Jogi Low as Germany manager.
