'The English anthem is just not played in Liverpool' | Kilbane on fans booing the anthem

Speaking on The Football Show on Off The Ball, Kevin Kilbane spoke about why Liverpool fans booed the English national anthem at Wembley on Sunday.

Kilbane was in attendance for the Community Shield and was bemused when he heard Liverpool fans booing the anthem.

"I was sat beside Guy Mowbray because I was commenting on the game for the highlights on BBC. I tapped him on the shoulder and asked what's the story there?

"Word gets around and one of our producers who is a massive Liverpool fan said it's basically the anti-establishment that has been going on for years.

"This has happened many, many times over the years not some much booing the anthem, the English anthem is just not played in Liverpool," Kilbane said.

Red or blue

As someone who's played on Merseyside, he does have experience with the "Scouse not English" mentality which some fans have.

"From my time in Everton, there was definitely a feeling around major tournaments like the Euros and the World Cup that they like watching it but they've no real interest in England."

"I think that's been the case with a lot of lads I think. It's ingrained in you in Liverpool, red or blue that is you that is your club.

"I think there is a sense of that in Manchester as well with United and City," the former Ireland international said.

While fans from Liverpool have resentment towards the national team he feels that those who support the national team are against big clubs like Liverpool.

"I think England fans in general, and a lot of the ones that I would have bumped into are from lesser clubs who would be supporting clubs in the lower leagues of English football and they might be anti some of the big clubs."

"Someone may correct me on this one but I do think that's been the case they're anti-Liverpool, United, City or Chelsea whoever the big clubs might be," he said.
