Although part of his role for Argentina is to make runs that drag defenders away and make space for Messi, he had little influence on proceedings during the dour Switzerland match.
Making just 13 passes, he also had just one shot on target with a header that was tipped over by Diego Benaglio.
While Ezequiel was the forward tasked with stretching play more often, Higuain's Squawka heat map shows his involvement in the final third of the pitch was quite static which made it easier for Switzerland's defenders to remain compact in the area around the box.
The version of Argentina which looked impressive in qualifying is one that plays quite vertically, on the counter-attack with a rapid interchange of passes between Messi, Aguero and Angel Di Maria. In that system, Higuain found the net nine times during the CONMEBOL qualifiers, just one goal behind Messi.
The lack of a top level deep-lying midfield creator in the Juan Sebastian Veron mould has been glaring in Brazil with Bosnia, Iran and Switzerland frustrating Argentina by sitting deep and preventing Argentina from playing the vertical style that they want to.
With a counter-attacking Belgium to come, Higuain will have to find a way of streamlining his movement to both create the space for Messi to avail of, but also to bookend chances.
