St Patrick's Athletic add Alan Mathews to coaching ticket

Former Shelbourne boss Alan Mathews has joined the backroom staff of St Patrick's Athletic as first-team manager.

Mathews, who is a current member of the club's board, will join head coach Stephen O'Donnell and assistant manager Patrick Cregg in the side's managerial team.

Mathews most recently managed Longford Town before leaving the club in May 2017 with his side struggling in mid-table of the First Division.

While Longford Town announced Mathews' departure as by "mutual consent" the former St. Patrick's Athletic player disputed that claim. Mathews' last game in charge was a 5-0 win over Wexford.

After his departure, Mathews said: "The chairman told me I was relieved of my position and so was Kevin Doherty. But the statement is fake news, it wasn’t mutual."

The two-time FAI Cup-winning manager with Longford Town will bring much-needed experience to the Inchicore side this year with both O'Donnell and Cregg in managerial positions for the first time.

St Pat's first preseason match is against Cobh Ramblers on Thursday, January 16th with a second game coming on Saturday, January 18th against non-league Fermoy in Carrig Park.

The European-chasing side's first league game will be against Waterford at Richmond Park.
