SPFL clubs ready to vote on whether to finish season early

SPFL clubs are set to vote on whether three of its divisions should finish the current season early but the Premiership is being given more time.

An official SPFL statement released today reads: "SPFL clubs are to vote on a resolution recommending the termination of the 2019/20 season in the Championship, League 1 and League 2.

The final season classification will be "determined by points per game in league matches played to date by each club".

It was announced in the middle of last month that the Scottish season was suspended "until further notice".

The Scottish Government has also publicly advised that expectations are that restrictions could remain in place for at least 13 weeks.

Today's resolution also recommends "that matches in the Premiership remain postponed for the time being, to give the best possible opportunity for the remaining 2019/20 fixtures to be played.

"However, if the SPFL Board determines that the remaining Premiership matches cannot be played, the Premiership would also be terminated and the final season placings will be determined on the same basis."

If it came to that, Celtic would be crowned champions for a record-equalling. ninth consecutive season.

The Parkhead club are currently 13 points clear, after 30 games, at the top of the table ahead of Glasgow rivals Rangers who have one game in hand.

Celtic have three matches to play before the table splits at which point each team plays a further five matches against each of the teams in their half of the table.

The Rangers director Alastair Johnston commented on such a situation last week.

"I don’t want to be frivolous about it but a lot of Rangers fans have reached out to me and basically said, 'Mr Johnston, if Celtic are designated as the winners of the league, does it mean they have won eight-and-a-half in a row?'

"That’s not something you want — that asterisk. So ideally I can’t imagine that anybody really wants to have their efforts undermined or compromised or not appreciated."
