Solskjaer expects top six to close gap on Liverpool and City

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't think Manchester City and Liverpool will amass the same huge points totals in the new Premier League season.

City were crowned champions on 98 points - one more than the Merseysiders.

Solskjaer says he's expecting the new campaign to be a much closer race between the top two and the rest.

"The Premier League is a very competitive league, what those two teams did last season was exceptional to get 97 and 98 points.

"I don’t think that will happen again. I think we will see a closer race this season.

"There are six teams who want to challenge for a Champions League place, there are one or two teams underneath who would also like that.

"But our aim is to focus on ourselves.

"We have to be better, improve, make sure Man Utd is our only focus and I’m sure we’ll get closer to the top."

The United boss is also hoping they can make some more signings soon ahead of the new campaign.

“As I’ve said a few times, we’re working on one or two cases, but my objective here now is we’ve got to get ready for the games and training sessions.

“Of course the transfer window will close when the league starts.

“I don’t think many of the players have had a pre-season like this before in the last two or three years because there have been championships. It’s their first pre-season for a little while.

“So, for us, in the first eight to 10 games you don’t win anything - but you can definitely lose the chance to win things. The first two months are vital for us.”
