Sligo Rovers have signed midfielder Greg Bolger for the 2021 season.
The 32-year-old announced on Sunday, after Shamrock Rovers lost the Extra.ie FAI Cup Final to Dundalk, that he would be departing the Dublin club.
The Wexford native came off the bench in the 83rd minute as Stephen Bradley’s side’s lost 4-2 after extra-time.
Penning a message on social media he said he had known for three weeks that the cup final would be his final game for the Hoops.
He thanked the club, fans, players, and management for their support over the last three years.
Bolger suffered a broken leg during the summer before making a successful return to league action five months later against his new club.
Speaking about his move to Liam Buckley's side he said,
“Liam has always been in contact with me. I’ve worked with him before and it’s a chance to sign with a club like Sligo Rovers steeped in history, I’m delighted to get it done and looking forward to the season.
“My contract was up at Shamrock Rovers and I looked around and it is always my motivation to join a club with ambition and wanting to win. I still have the ambition to do well. I’m looking to help Liam, I know he’s got a vision and he wants to get good players into the club with the good ones there already. It was a no-brainer for me.
“Looking at the squad, and talking to Liam with the players he is trying to get into the club, it was something that appealed to me. I’m still as hungry as ever and I’m going up to give the club and Liam the best I can give him.
“I’ve had some great battles over the years with Sligo Rovers. One of the best days of my career was probably playing against Sligo when winning the league with St Patrick’s Athletic. One of the worst was as well the year before in that 3-2 game when Mark Quigley scored. Many memories, always difficult, with the crowd and the atmosphere they bring. It’s one I’m looking forward to next year being on their side.
“I’m ready to go. Obviously, I had a bad injury where I was out for five months. It’s a case of now I’m going to keep training and I’ll be ready to go to fire on all cylinders come pre-season."
