Shane Long is looking to settle scores when Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign resumes in the New Year.
The Southampton striker told Newstalk’s Breakfast that Ireland’s 1-0 defeat by Scotland at Parkhead last month was a “sickener” the Boys in Green need to "put right”.
Martin O'Neill's men received a lift a few days later when walloping the USA 4-1 and Long believes Ireland can take momentum from that friendly victory.
“The last game against Scotland was a bit of a sickener,” Long said. “We expected more of ourselves in that game. We need to put that right."
The Tipperary man was on air to discuss the ‘Home to Hurl’ campaign, an online appeal made by his GAA club, Gortnahoe-Glengoole, to their former players across the globe to come home for a charity game on St Stephen's Day.
He continued: "We’ve a few tough games coming up. We know it’s one of the hardest groups to qualify out of with Germany, Poland, ourselves and Scotland competing for two places.
“Hopefully we can continue what we done against the USA and bring that into the next game.”
Long also discussed his first few months after a big-money move to Southampton, gave the O’Neill-Roy Keane management partnership a thumbs-up, reflected on being a professional footballer over the Christmas, and expanded on the ‘Home to Hurl’ campaign.
