'Roy Keane was buzzing' | Elliott on equalising against Mick McCarthy's Wolves

Roy Keane was delighted when Stephen Elliott scored a late equaliser against Mick McCarthy’s Wolves, earning the former Ireland striker a rare hug.

The former Sunderland man was speaking on Off The Ball's Football Saturday and spoke about the 2006 Championship fixture.

He explained that securing the draw for the Black Cats against Keane's former manager made it all the sweeter for his manager.

“He was especially pleased when I scored the equaliser at Molineux in a game when Mick [McCarthy] was managing Wolves. Obviously they were 1-0 down.

“They had spoken through the week - Mick and Roy - because obviously Neil Collins had done a loan move in the week of that game. I think it might have been a Friday night game if I’m correct,” Elliott said.

The former Manchester United captain isn’t one for showing affection on a regular basis, but Elliott was able to secure a hug off the man that day.

“So I scored the equaliser and I could just tell Roy was buzzing.

“None of them wanted to lose that game and he gave me a bit of a wink and a squeeze after that game. It’s probably the nicest he’s ever been to me because he definitely didn’t want to lose that game.

McCarthy was none too happy about the goal, according to Elliott, as the Wolves manager was just as eager as Keane to win the game against his old acquaintance.

“When I see Mick now he still holds that goal against me because obviously he wanted to get one up over Roy and me scoring the goal killed that for him.

The praise the striker received from Keane was clearly one of the more memorable moments for Elliott during his time at Sunderland.

“Listen Roy didn’t give out hugs very often but he did then,” Elliott explained.
