St. Patrick’s Athletic have made a solid step towards European qualification with a 1-1 draw with Shamrock Rovers at Richmond Park.
With the Dublin rivals vying for the third European slot, and the Saints leading Rovers by 7 points before kick off, a draw was always likely to be far more satisfactory for the home side.
Things started well for Rovers, however, with Gary McCabe scoring after just four minutes – slipping in to capitalise on a poor back pass header from Ger O’Brien and poke the ball past Brendan Clarke in the Pat’s goal.
Conan Byrne levelled matters on the hour mark when he fired home from Aaron Greene’s assist.
Fahey went close for Pat’s twice but in the final few minutes it was Pat Fenlon’s Rovers side that looked most likely to snatch the win. Ciaran Kilduff and Jason McGuinness both spurned good chances to score the winner.
Pat’s hung on for the draw that leaves Rovers needing to close a seven point gap with just five games remaining.
