Manchester City moved on level points with Chelsea after a narrow win at home to Sunderland.
Frank Lampard, who will remain at the club until the end of the season, headed the winner 15 minutes from time.
Yaya Toure and Stevan Jovetic scored after half-time to put the Sky Blues 2-0 up. But former City players Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson scored twice in three minutes - Johnson from the spot - to equalise.
But Lampard headed in Gael Clichy's cross to make it 3-2.
Southampton 2 - 0 Arsenal
Arsenal slipped three points behind fourth placed Southampton after the Saints out-maneuvered them at St Mary's.
Southampton took a first half lead when Sadio Mane curled in from a tight angle after Wojciech Szczesny wandered into no-man's land.
The Gunners keeper was involved in another mix-up 10 minutes after the break to allow Dusan Tadic prodded in at the far post.
Liverpool 2 - 2 Leicester
Brendan Rodgers's side missed the chance to close the gap on the European places after letting a two-goal lead slip at Anfield.
Steven Gerrard scored twice in the first half to give Liverpool a strong lead with two penalties.
But David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp got the goals for the bottom of the table Foxes.
Hull 2 - 0 Everton
The Toffees poor form continued as they slumped to a fourth loss in a row with defeat at the KC Stadium.
Goals from Egyptian full-back Ahmed Elmohamady and ex-Everton striker Nikica Jelavic gave Hull victory and left the struggling Merseyside side down in 13th.
Everton had defender Antolin Alcaraz sent off in the closing stages.
Meanwhile, a Newcastle side led by caretaker manager John Carver drew 3-3 at home to Burnley who got a late equaliser through Danny Ings.
West Ham and QPR also drew 1-1 at home to West Brom and Swansea respectively.
Aston Villa and Crystal Palace finished scoreless at Villa Park.
