Since Richard Dunne retired from the game, the ex-Ireland centre-back has found a home from home in Monaco where he and his family moved.
He spent the entirety of his professional career in England though with the likes of Manchester City, Everton and Aston Villa.
But he briefly had the chance to move to La Liga at one point as he told Newstalk's Team 33 at the launch of SSE Airtricity's #PowerOfGreen Campaign, which was five years on from that epic performance in Moscow.
"I actually nearly signed for Malaga at one stage but it was a problem with translation or something like that," he said.
"But I ended up being injured for that whole year so that would have been a nice holiday. But looking back, I think maybe [it would have been a good experience to have]. But at the time, I don't know if I would have been brave enough to actually do it so it wasn't something I had to think about really. I was quite happy where I was and I enjoyed the Premier League as a competition more than a European league."
We will broadcast the full chat on Newstalk's Team 33 on Tuesday, September 13th in which he also discusses his time at Manchester City including the not so satisfactory ending and of course that performance against Russia in Moscow.
