Virgil van Dijk says he'd be 'gutted' to win Premier League in empty stadium

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has said that he'd be "gutted" if the ongoing Coronavirus spread meant they'd win the Premier League in an empty stadium.

With all top-flight football suspended in the UK until at least April 4th as the world attempts to slow down the spread of Covid-19, there has been recent speculation that the 2019-2020 league could be abandoned and declared null and void.

Others are calling for it to come to an early finish and Liverpool, who are 25 points clear at the top of the table, would be awarded the title.

Officials are to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the way forward.

Expert medical advice is currently being gathered so that proposals can be put to clubs with detailed sporting and financial implications.

Speaking about the situation, and its possible implications, 28-year-old Van Dijk says he'd be disappointed for fans primarily.

"No one wants to play games without the fans. If we won it in an empty stadium and the fans weren't there, I'd be gutted for them.

"Obviously, if there are no fans at Anfield, then it will be a bit of a blow.

"Until a decision is made on how we go on from here, then we just have to deal with it. But when it happens, we are still bringing the title to our fans, definitely."

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has also commented upon the pandemic.

In a statement released on the club's website on Friday, he urged fans to think beyond football and to remember that the greater good of society must come before football.
