Premier League and EFL restart confirmed for September 12th

The Premier League have confirmed that the 2020/21 campaign will commence on September 12th. The league will end on May 23rd, 2021.

The league released a statement on Friday afternoon revealing the start date, while also acknowledging that further discussions would take place over the scheduling of competitions.

"Premier League Shareholders today agreed to start the 2020/21 Premier League season on 12 September 2020.

The final round of the campaign will take place on 23 May 2021.

The Premier League will continue to consult The FA and EFL regarding the scheduling of all domestic competitions," the statement read.

Off The Ball will have exclusive radio commentary of the biggest games every Sunday.

The English Football League also confirmed that the Championship, League One, and League Two would get underway on the same weekend. The EFL season will end on May 9th, before the Play-offs begin.

The new season will recommence three weeks after the Champions League Final, which takes place in Lisbon on August 23rd.

There are two English teams left in the competition, Manchester City and Chelsea.

City will have to navigate a tricky second leg against Spanish champions Real Madrid before booking their place in Lisbon. They have a marginal 2-1 aggregate lead over Madrid heading into the second leg, in Manchester.

Chelsea, on the other hand, face a mountainous challenge in overturning a 3-0 deficit against Bayern Munich.

Both Manchester United and Wolves are still in the Europa League, which concludes in Cologne on August 21st.

If either of the four English sides left in Europe do manage to make it to either final they would face a three-week turnaround before domestic competition restarts.

It has been previously reported that those clubs would ask to start the league later than the other 16 top-flight sides.

The matter is further complicated by the resumption of the UEFA Nations League which is due to commence on September 3rd.
