Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson believes Mario Balotelli is worth the risk for Liverpool.
Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Thompson said: "Hopefully in the two years since he left, he's grown up a little bit, he's a father. Will it all change? I doubt it 100 per cent so it is a risk. But I think for £16 million, it's a risk worth taking," said Thompson of a player who is set to sign within the next few days.
He also critiqued Manchester United's performance against Sunderland and questioned where prospective new signing Angel Di Maria will fit in.
Former Ireland international John Anderson was at the Stadium of Light for the 1 - 1 draw and he spoke to Nathan Murphy after the match.
"This could be the biggest job Van Gaal's ever had to try and turn this around. There's a lot of talk about Di Maria but on the evidence of what we've seen here, it's going to take a lot more than Di Maria to put this right," he said.
