Pat Nevin on why it's time to put Rooney in midfield from now on

Pat Nevin believes it is time to play Wayne Rooney in midfield more regularly from now on.

The Manchester United impressed at times in that role as Manchester United beat Pat's and Rooney's former club Everton 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final.

"Everyone will throw the stats at you that Wayne Rooney will score x amount of goals when he's been playing up front. But he's never causing any problems of running beyond people. So you might get a few goals from him because he's a very good player, but you've got a whole bunch of goals from him from midfield as well," said Pat on Off The Ball, also saying he will become quite capable of learning to make the Frank Lampard-esque runs from deep midfield as time goes on.

"My only complaint would be if I were Manchester United people, I'd be saying 'why the hell have you taken so long to figure that one out."

Pat also spoke about how impressed he was with Leicester's 4-0 thrashing of Swansea to move ever closer to the Premier League title, while he expects Tottenham to keep getting stronger into next season.

And Pat also gave his take on the future for Everton and their under-pressure manager Roberto Martinez.
