Opinion: Chelsea are only an injury or two away from falling back into the chasing pack

Premier League leaders Chelsea are currently riding the highs of a remarkable run which has seen them win their last 11 league matches in a row and leaves them six points clear at the top of the table.

A patchy start to their domestic campaign saw them lose big games against Liverpool and Arsenal but they have won 11 straight since, keeping nine clean sheets along the way.

Diego Costa has been lethal scoring - 13 goals as we reach the half-way point in the season.

Manager Antonio Conte changed the shape of his team to a 3-4-3 and it has proved a tactical masterstroke.

Chelsea's lack of European action has allowed the squad to be fresh between domestic matches and they appear to have capitalised as the weeks have gone by.

However, they have also been very lucky with injuries. Should something happen to Costa and he requires a significant amount of time off - they have no proven Premier League goalscorer to take his place.

Michy Batsuayi has yet to prove himself in England despite arriving in the capital with a big reputation and even bigger price tag.

Dominic Solanke is also registered but he is yet to see any league action this season.

Chelsea's defence is the best in the league complementing their impressive attacking out-put although an injury to Thibaut Courtois and the less-reliable Asmir Begovic gets called into action.

Conte's men deserve to be where they are at the moment but trophies don't get handed out in December. By the start of February, they will have played Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool again and we will have a better idea of where they stand as the season heads towards its climax.

For now, they are the best but an injury to Costa or Courtois and they might find themselves caught by the chasing pack.
