Off The Ball delve into Pellegrini's early days in football

Would the real Manuel Pellegrini please stand up?

Sometimes it easy to forget that the Manchester City manager hails from Chile given that he has been associated with European football for so long.

To learn more about his achievements in South America prior to taking over at Villarreal in 2004, we were joined as always on a Tuesday by BBC South American football expert Tim Vickery.

"He was a centre-back at a leading club in Chile for a long time. He wasn't a leading player. He was a jobbing club servant, one of those people who to get the most out of his talent had to think about it and has also liked to think about other things," said Tim, alluding to Pellegrini's engineering background.

Tim described Pellegrini's move to manage in Argentina as the real launch pad for his career, which was a "tall order" for a Chilean moving into a bigger footballing pond.

He also told us about how he had to toughen up when he first signed for San Lorenzo, something that he would serve him well in later years.

"They got onto the fact that that he was a qualified engineer and there were openly hostile questions in the press conference, along the lines of 'We saw you're an engineer. Have you come to fix the stadium as well, while you're at it?'"

Tim compared his suaveness to Roger Moore's portrayal of The Saint and how he sets the tone in his managerial career at major clubs, although he was far more volatile in his early days.
