Valencia and Germany defender Skhodran Mustafi has agreed to join Arsenal.
But as of yet a fee has not been agreed between the Gunners and his Spanish club.
Arsene Wenger is in frantic need of a centre-back ahead of the new Premier League season, with Per Mertesacker to miss the first few months of the season with injury, Gabriel Paulista having picked up an ankle also sidelined with an ankle complaint and Laurent Koscielny not due to return after being time off after France's Euro 2016 campaign.
That means 20-year-old new signing Rob Holding and Calum Chambers, who has only sporadically played centre-back are the likely partnership for Arsenal's opener against Liverpool on Sunday.
Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy are also options to play through the middle in an emergency.
Mustafi, who was previously on the books at Everton until 2012, has 12 caps for Germany and represented his country at Euro 2016.
He could cost Arsenal about £30 million (€34.85 million).
