Vurnon Anita got the crucial Newcastle goal as they held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at St James Park.
The Magpies, who are fighting against the drop, stay second-bottom but a point from that game in hand on 17th place Norwich puts them within two points of the Canaries with four games to go.
Sergio Aguero gave third-placed City the lead 14 minutes in when the Argentine headed in Aleksandar Kolarov's free-kick from an offside position.
But Newcastle fought back and were level on the half hour mark when Anita cut in from the right flank and fired a shot across goal that went in off the post.
Moussa Sissoko also had a chance to score for Newcastle when clean through on goal but Joe Hart blocked.
The Man City No 1 also smothered a late attempt from Giorginio Wijnaldum, while the Manchester side also had a penalty shout when Aguero appeared to be felled in the box.
