New contract for De Bruyne as City lock down midfielder until 2025

Kevin de Bruyne has signed a new contract extension at Manchester City, which should bring him up past a decade of service to the Premier League side.

De Bruyne's current deal had been set to expire at the end of 2023, with this morning's extension securing his long-term future until 2025.

The Belgian joined the club from Wolfsburg in 2015 for a fee in the region of £55 million, and has gone on to cement his place as a club legend in the six years since, scoring 105 goals in just over 250 games.

In that time, he's won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and four League Cups. The only trophy left to win is the Champions League, with City taking a 2-1 lead into next week's quarter final second leg against Borussia Dortmund, De Bruyne scoring the opener in last night's first leg win. A third Premier League title looks inevitable too, with City 14 points clear of second place Manchester United, with eight games left to play.

The midfielder turns 30 this summer, and his future had looked uncertain when the club were facing a potential exclusion from the Champions League, before their suspension was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Speaking upon signing his new deal, the midfielder said he's delighted to continue his journey under manager Pep Guardiola.

"I could not be happier," he said

"Since joining City in 2015, I have felt at home. I love the fans, my family are settled here in Manchester and my own game has developed really well.

"This football club is geared for success. It offers me everything I need to maximise my performance, so signing this contract was a straightforward decision. I am playing the best football of my career and I honestly feel there is more to come.

"Pep and I see football in the same way. Having that relationship with a manager is so important to me because our objectives are totally aligned and we want the same things.

"My focus now is on ensuring we have a successful end to the current campaign. Our results and performances so far have been excellent, but we need to make sure we end the season with the silverware we deserve."
