'Within three years Man United need to be winning trophies'

Today the British media got their first chance to question Louis Van Gaal in his new role at Manchester United.

The ex-Holland, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager had plenty of interesting soundbites from his plans to keep the Class of 92 at the the club, his commitment to trusting young players to potential signings.

The rest of this summer will be fascinating as Van Gaal prepares to right the wrongs of the David Moyes regime and to whet the appetite we were joined on the line by United We Stand editor Andy Mitten who believes fans will be satisfied with a Top Four finish in the Dutchman's first season in charge.

"The definition of success is Top 4 next season, playing good football and a good Cup run. Within three years, Man United need to be winning trophies again. They need to be winning the Premier League, they need to be there or thereabouts in the Champions League," said Mitten, who added that United are financially stable.

There is also excitement about the impact he will have on the players based on his past relationships, citing interviews and comments by his former players Luis Enrique, Jari Litmanen and Patrick Kluivert.

"People often make a lot about the rows that Louis Van Gaal has had with former players and I spoke to a lot of his former players before the Manchester United connection came about. Players who have thrived under him are incredibly loyal to him. When players click with Van Gaal, they absolutely adore him," said Mitten.

Mitten believes the relationship with his assistant Ryan Giggs will be crucial and also thinks the departure of players who were unhappy with Moyes will also help.
